Overview



Welcome English is voluntary community organisation, coordinated by the Sisters of Mercy. The Centre is a registered Charity with a CHY number.


It utilises the skills and talent of dedicated volunteer tutors to provide English Language Classes to those most in need in the Cork city area.


There are a number of benefits to the community of the project


  • The English classes help to improve the immigrants smooth integration into Irish society by giving them the ability to communicate more effectively to the people of Cork.
  • The centre offers a fantastic social outlet  This can be a lifeline for some students who may have been feeling isolated in a unfamiliar country.
  • Some students gain English language certification through FETAC or IELTS qualifications.
  • The centre provides a valuable outlet for newly qualified English teachers to gain experience.
  • Retired teachers who volunteer are given a flexible environment where they can contribute to the community giving them a valuable sense of purpose.

Each session includes a coffee break, which gives the students and staff the opportunity to meet, interact with one another and make new friends . Below is a video of a typical coffee break at the Centre.
